At Zuzu everything is prepared with thoughtfulness and care - even our black beans are made with pure virgin olive oil, vegetable stock and epazote. We prepare our rice the same way; it's made with vegetable stock and studded with green peas and diced carrots.

When ZuZu first opened in Austin back in 1994, it was part of the ZuZu franchise - that is not the way it is today.
1997 was an important year for ZuZu's and it's owners, Russell and Laura Arnold. 1997 was the year that ZuZu's Austin separated itself from the franchise and became an independent, locally-owned restaurant. It was also the year that Russell and Laura got married. Russell and Laura continue to operate the restaurant to this day, keeping it true to its original purpose of preparing fresh, handmade Mexican food for our customers, delivered quickly at a great price.
Russell runs the daily operations of the restaurant, and our loyal customers are used to seeing him at ZuZu's every day greeting and taking customers orders during lunch. Many of ZuZu's cooks and servers have been with ZuZu from the beginning, and everybody who works here is part of the extended ZuZu family.
Most of the ZuZu family of cooks and servers come from Michoacan, Mexico, a state in central Mexico known for its lakes, scenery and exquisite food. They bring to ZuZu's their own family recipes that they have kept in their families for generations. In fact, over half of ZuZu's recipes come from our employees including menu items such as our mole sauce, handmade beef barbacoa, and chimichanga, as well as daily specials such as Eladio's carne guisadaThe fact that ZuZu's is an Austin-owned, family-owned business, operated and staffed by a team of people who are part of an extended ZuZu family is what sets ZuZu's apart and makes it unique.
